The new silk route

The New Silk Route is a cluster of railway tracks that link the Port of Antwerp to the industrial city of Chongqing. The two economical entities try to set up a stable, frequent and fast freight train connection between them, adding multiple stops en route to the Eurasian continent.

The name ‘Silk route’ refers to the ancient trading trail between Europe, Africa and Asia, where Chinese silk was exchanged for other valuable goods like spices, gold, jewelry or cattle. The modern trading goods are chemicals, pharmaceutical products, deep fried food and electronic parts.

The ancient silk route didn’t only trade goods; it also exchanged cultural values, political ideas and foreign experiences. As we now live in a globalized world - the ripe fruit of the ancient silk route - the intercultural differences may be well-known to mankind, andthe chasm between you and your neighbour might be bigger than the one between a man living thousands of kilometers away from you.
